Known for documentary, environmental portrait, studio, corporate and advertising photography, Thurston is a socially concerned visionary.

Thurston’s love for photography became evident at an early age. He opened his first portrait studio when he was still in high school. Knowing he had found his life’s work, he went on to receive a Masters of Fine Arts degree in photography from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Teaching has been a lifelong passion for Thurston. He has educated photography students at Maine College of Art, University of Southern Maine, SMCC, Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood College, Virginia Tech, and John Tyler Community College, through courses including black and white photography, Documentery Photography, Photographic processes and techniques, Photojournalism, Personal expression workshops, Digital Photography and Commercial studio photography. Thurston has over 35 years  experience educating photographers.

Thurston’s work has been featured in many national and international fine art exhibitions as well as several feature films, including a one man shows at The Southeast Center of Contemporary Art, and The Anderson Gallery in Richmond VA. Distinguished by numerous awards, Thurston is a  Polaroid grant recipient and was awarded a Virginia Commission for the Arts fellowship. Thurston is one of four distinguished Virginia artists whose work was featured in “The State of The Arts in Virginia”, a recent exhibit in the Senate offices in Washington, DC where his documentary photographs of Virginians were featured.  His photography has also been in exhibitions in the Virginia Museum of Fine arts, as well as in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Smithsonian Rock and Roll permanent collection and the Ackland Art Museum at The University of North Carolina's permanent collection.
